Dolls' House performance

A derelict dolls’ house and an abandoned bag of costumes are the original, if unexpected starting point for this enigmatic new show. Through it we explore the classic dream symbol of ‘The House’ and open a window on the inhabitants’ secret lives and eternal dilemmas. Bizarre, moving, and darkly comic, the performance uses specially-composed music to underpin the characters’ struggle with the limitations of their bodies, gender, roles, and relationships. Funding from Arts Council England and Oxford City Council has supported the creation of this new show, which blends butoh with original live music and film to evoke half-remembered (and dismembered) stories of self, family, home, and the passage of time.

Diamond Night #16

(See the main Diamond Night page for general information about these events.)

The sixteenth in our series of arts evenings, bringing 'uncut performance gems' (ours and others') into the spotlight.

Oxford Brookes University Drama Studio map
Headington Hill Campus
Headington Hill, Oxford
Cost: FREE (You may contribute towards costs if you choose.)
Time: 7:30pm for 8:00pm start

Directions... map
...from central Oxford, follow High Street over the river to the roundabout at The Plain, take the first exit (St Clements) and continue past traffic lights and straight on up Headington Hill, past the park, and then take the first driveway to the LEFT near the top of the hill, into the Brookes University Headington Hill Campus. Go past the gatehouse and take the 2nd turning on the right. The Drama Studio is a smallish, squarish building with railings outside the door, set back from the main driveway. It is usually possible to park there on Saturday evenings.

...from London, buses go every ten minutes at peak times and run all night. Catch either the Oxford Tube, or the X90, and ask for the'Gyspy Lane' or 'Brookes University'stop. Get off the bus and CROSS THE ROAD. There are two campuses, and the one you want is the less obvious one, a few metres further down the hill towards Oxford city centre and on the right hand side of the road.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE ENTRANCE DOOR OPENS DIRECTLY ONTO THE STAGE. IF YOU ARE SO LATE THAT THE PROGRAMME HAS ALREADY BEGUN, THERE IS NO WAY TO LET YOU IN WITHOUT DISRUPTING THE PERFORMANCE. IF THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY BETWEEN PIECES THE DOOR WILL BE OPENED TO CHECK FOR LATECOMERS, BUT PLEASE DO NOT KNOCK UNLESS AN INTERVAL IS CLEARLY IN PROGRESS!

Friday 22nd July 2016, 7.00pm – 10.00pm
Holly Chernobyl workshop

East Oxford Community Centre, Princes Street, OX4 1DD
£15.00

This workshop will focus on transformation, time manipulation, making and crossing boundaries, and exploring butoh technique. We will ask questions and write answers with and within the body. The workshop attempts to contain and release energy through mental, emotional, and physical focusing exercises: structured and improvised movement, partner work, vocalization, and using the breath as our best resource.
For more information about Holly, see her
website

Saturday 30th July 2016, 10.00am – 5.00pm
Outdoor 1-day workshop with Macarena Ortuzar

Heath Farm, Swerford, Chipping Norton, OX7 4BN
£25.00

This workshop, open to all, presents a rare opportunity to participate in dance-practice that is based on bringing our bodies closer to the earth and the natural environment, offering the chance to pause, breathe, listen, and observe, to attune the senses, to discover silence and stillness. It will offer space to investigate and to harmonise darkness and light, strength and weakness, connections and disconnections, calm and storm, as a dancer and as a human. We will work throughout the day on structured physical training to recondition the body and the mind, playing with breathing and with movement, with silence and with improvisation.

Friday 14th - Sunday 16th/Monday 17th October 2016
Landscape retreat

YHA St. David's, Llaethdy, Pembrokeshire

This outdoor workshop, set within the stunning landscapes of the Pembrokeshire coast, will be led by Yumino Seki. Through grounding, opening, and awareness exercises, and structured exploration of the environment and our bodies' response to it, we hope to awaken, discover, dance, and share with each other our own unique inner landscapes. Currently, registration for this workshop is full, but if you would like to be informed of any cancellations, please contact
Ayala Kingsley
